Meal Service Volunteer

Position Summary

The Meal Service Volunteer plays an essential role in creating a welcoming, respectful, and dignified experience for patrons accessing services at CFOC-Doors of Compassion (CFOC-DOC). Volunteers assist with meal preparation support, food service, setup and cleanup, and patron engagement while helping to foster an inclusive and compassionate environment.

Responsibilities

Before Meal Service

  • Prepare and organize food service supplies, utensils, beverages, and condiments.
  • Ensure food service areas are clean, organized, and ready for patrons.
  • Follow all food handling and safety procedures as directed by staff.

During Meal Service

  • Welcome patrons in a friendly, respectful, and non-judgmental manner.
  • Serve meals according to established portion guidelines.
  • Replenish supplies as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety throughout the meal service.
  • Support an inclusive environment that respects the dignity and diverse experiences of all patrons.

After Meal Service

  • Assist with clearing tables and collecting used dishes and utensils.
  • Help wash, sanitize, and store kitchen equipment and supplies.
  • Dispose of waste and recycling according to organizational procedures.
  • Clean and sanitize dining and food preparation areas.
  • Assist with resetting the space for future programming as required.

Afiwi Groove School is seeking a Costume Coordinator to support our June 28 Showcase at the Regent Theatre. This role is essential to helping our performers look and feel prepared, confident, and stage-ready.

The Costume Coordinator will work closely with Afiwi’s costume designer and makers to organize costume production, fittings, and final preparation. They will also coordinate volunteers to support backstage costume changes for two shows, helping ensure a smooth and professional showcase experience for all performers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate costumes with the designer and makers for all showcase groups

  • Track sizing, alterations, and missing costume pieces

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide local and long distance transportation for children.

on an annual basis.

VOLUNTEER SECREENING
To become an approved volunteer with the Society, all applicants must complete the
screening process. Acceptance will be based on the results of this process.

• Volunteers must be 18 years or older.
• Volunteers must live or work in the Durham Region.
• Applicants will complete an application form.
• An internal Society records check will be completed to determine any Society involvement.
• A provincial records check will be completed within the Child Protection Information Network (CPIN)
• Applicants will provide the names of three references. 
• Applicants will provide a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector screening
• Applicants will provide proof of a valid driver’s license and a favorable driver’s abstract from the Ministry of Transportation when an assignment involves transporting children, youth and families.
• Applicants will be interviewed by a RAD team member to determine their suitability as a volunteer.
• Applicants will provide a Release of Information to contact other Children’s Aid Societies when there has been involvement or if they have resided outside of the Region for the last 10 years.
• Applicants will attend and complete New Volunteer Training
• Applicants must sign an Oath of Confidentiality
• Applicants will sign the Volunteer Agreement
• The applicant will be notified when they have been either approved or denied.

Job Duties – Legion Kitchen Helper / Food Service Support

Food Preparation & Service

  • Take food orders from patrons at the counter.
  • Prepare simple food items such as fries,  hamburgers, hot dogs, poutine, onion rings, chicken fingers, etc. while using grills, and fryers. 
  • Portion, assemble, and plate meals, or package take-out orders for patrons.
  • For various events brew and serve coffee, and tea. 
  • Report used items per end of shift to ensure stock replenishment
  • Restock napkins and condiments and refridgerator when needed 

Kitchen Support

  • Wash, peel, and chop vegetables and or fruit for meal preparation.
  • Assist cooks by preparing ingredients and performing basic food prep tasks if aiding in a large scale event. 
  • Unpack, rotate, and store food supplies in refrigerators, freezers, and cupboards. 
  • Wash worktables, counters, appliances, and maintain overall cleanliness of the kitchen.
  • Sweep, mop, and sanitize kitchen floors.
  • Remove trash and clean garbage containers regularly.

Dishwashing & Cleaning

  • Wash dishes, glassware, flatware, pots, and pans by hand or using a dishwasher.
  • Dry and store clean dishes and cooking utensils.
  • Scrub and scour pots, pans, and trays

Dining Room & Event Support

  • Clear and clean tables, trays, and service areas.
  • Replenish condiments and table supplies in dining and or bar areas, including salt, pepper, ketchup, ect. 
  • Assist with table setup and preparation for Legion events, dinners, and gatherings.
  • Run errands and provide general assistance to kitchen and bar staff during functions.
  • Aid in kitchen support, or serving support depending on size of event. 

We have various leagues that run thoughout the year, we need volunteers to cover the evening shifts doing pub style food, Tuesdays Darts, Wednesdays Euchre, Friday Night Darts & Kararoke 7:30pm till 11,  Saturday Afternoon Meatrolls at 2pm, Saturday night Live bands 7:30pm to 1am, and Sunday afternoons 1pm till 5pm. Looking for folks with cash handling experince, culinary students, etc.

As a Peer Support Volunteer, you will provide emotional support, empathy, and a listening presence to individuals and families who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss. Drawing from your own lived experience, you’ll offer one-on-one or group-based support, helping others feel seen, heard, and less alone in their grief.

Responsibilities:

  • Offer compassionate, non-judgmental support via phone, loss-specific online group, or in-person meetings

  • Uphold personal and professional boundaries in all interactions

  • Maintain confidentiality and respect each family's unique grief journey

  • Participate in ongoing training, reflection, and supervision

  • Collaborate with fellow volunteers and staff to ensure safe, inclusive support

Qualifications:

  • Personal experience with pregnancy or infant loss (your own or as a close loved one)

  • Ability to listen deeply without trying to “fix” or minimize grief

  • Willingness to reflect on your own healing process and maintain self-awareness

  • Commitment to empathy, inclusivity, and trauma-informed care

Time Commitment: Flexible; typically 2–4 hours per month, with additional time for training and meetings as needed.

Volunteers offer a listening ear, shared understanding, and companionship on the grief journey, creating a safe space for bereaved individuals to express their feelings, share memories, and receive validation from someone who “gets it.” By joining our team, you’ll help ensure that no one has to grieve alone.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide emotional support through one-on-one phone calls, online meetings, or in-person (as appropriate) to individuals who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss.
  • Listen actively, showing empathy and compassion, and creating a safe, non-judgmental space for individuals to share their grief.
  • Share your own experiences in a supportive and respectful manner, when appropriate, to help normalize and validate the individual’s feelings.
  • Support participants in finding resources and encourage self-care practices that align with their unique grief journey.
  • Communicate and collaborate with PAIL Network staff, sharing updates as needed while respecting the privacy and confidentiality of participants.
  • Complete initial and ongoing training to enhance skills, including workshops on grief, trauma-informed care, and cultural sensitivity.

Qualifications:

  • Personal experience with pregnancy or infant loss and a desire to support others going through similar experiences.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills, with the ability to provide empathetic, non-judgmental support.
  • Respect for confidentiality and boundaries, with an understanding of the importance of privacy in peer support relationships.
  • Ability to commit to regular volunteer sessions, showing reliability and consistency.
  • Willingness to participate in training, supervision, and support meetings as needed.

Training and Support:

  • Comprehensive training on topics such as grief, trauma-informed care, effective communication, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Ongoing support from PAIL Network staff and access to additional training opportunities.
  • Regular check-ins and debriefing sessions to support volunteers in their role.

The Youth Justice Committee is a youth diversion program established under the Youth Criminal Justice Act as an alternative to the formal court system to handle low-risk offenses committed by young persons between their 12th and 18th birthdays in the Durham Region. Together they will negotiate meaningful ways or “sanctions” for the youth to repair the harm caused.

Nightstop is an alternative to shelter that adopts a preventative approach to homelessness by intervening at an early stage of crisis in order to help youth secure safe temporary housing, avoiding the shelter system or sleeping “rough” on the streets.

The program engages the community to act as “Hosts” for young people who have nowhere else to go and who have successfully passed a thorough risk assessment.

Community members help prevent that first night in shelter by offering a spare room and meals for short-term stays. Hosts and youth continue to be supported by DYS staff every step of the way.

Hosts are responsible for providing a private bedroom, access to laundry and bathroom facilities, as well as three meals (dinner, breakfast, and a packed lunch).
