ABOUT THE OSHAWA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The Oshawa Historical Society is a not-for-profit charitable institution, founded in 1957 and is an affiliate of the Ontario Historical Society. The purpose of the Oshawa Historical Society is to bring together those individuals interested in the diverse historical aspects of Oshawa and to research, record, retain, preserve, and present historical information pertaining to the Oshawa area.
The Society also operates the Oshawa Museum, which celebrates Oshawa’s history with engaging events, inspiring exhibits, and an immense collection of archival materials. Nestled on the shores of Lake Ontario in beautiful Lakeview Park, the Oshawa Museum tells the story of Oshawa from Indigenous inhabitants to present day.
The Oshawa Museum is situated on the traditional territory and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. Our work on these lands acknowledges the signatory communities of the Williams Treaties, as well as the Mississauga Nation and other members of the broader Indigenous community, for their resilience, and their longstanding contributions to the area now known as the Durham region.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Oshawa Historical Society (managing the Oshawa Museum) is currently accepting applications for appointment to its Board of Directors. Each volunteer Board member will serve until the next Annual General Meeting, where they may be elected to the Board for the following year.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Board will:
- Provide strategic leadership
- Manage resources effectively
- Set future goals
- Determine and monitor the OHS’ programs and services
- Enhance the public image of the OHS
Board members are expected to:
- Understand and demonstrate a commitment to the organization’s mission and programs
- Attend meetings on a regular basis
- Prepare for meetings by reading agendas, minutes, reports and other documentation required to actively participate in them
- Contribute skills and knowledge by participating actively in meetings and committee work
- Avoid any potential conflicts of interest
- Understand and maintain confidentiality
- Ensure the organization is complying with all legal and regulatory requirements
- Support Board decisions and policies outside of board meetings
The Oshawa Historical Society is responsible to Board members in the following ways:
- Monthly financial reports and an update of organizational activities will be sent to board members that allow them to meet their fiduciary duties as board members.
- Opportunities will be offered for board members to discuss with the executive director and the board president the organization's programs, goals, activities, and status; additionally, such opportunities can be requested.
- The OHS will keep board members informed about issues in the field and provide opportunities for professional development as a board member.
- Board members and staff will respond in a timely, straightforward manner to inquiries that are necessary to carry out fiscal, legal, and moral responsibilities to the OHS. Board members and staff will work in good faith with one another toward achievement of organizational goals.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge or an interest in aspects of the history of Oshawa
- Post-secondary or work experience in a relevant field
- At this time, the Board of Directors is especially interested in recruiting members with working knowledge and education in the following areas: project management, fundraising, human resources.
As a board member, you will be required to:
- Be an advocate for the organization.
- Attend quarterly board meetings – please note that currently most of the meetings are held online and when in person, they are held in the Oshawa area.
- Actively serve on at least one Board committee and support committee initiatives.
- Attend and support fundraising and project initiatives when possible.
We are particularly interested in board members with the following:
- Experience in finance and accounting; a licensed Chartered Public Accountant is an asset.
- Expertise and experience in Human Resources.
- Legal expertise, particularly in non-profit law.
- Fundraising experience and expertise.
- Lived experience that aligns with our mission, i.e., cultural education, community empowerment, and social justice.
- Any experience or expertise in DEIA is considered an asset.
Simcoe Hall, Board of Directors, Treasurer
BACKGROUND
Simcoe Hall Settlement House was established in 1935 by the Women’s Welfare League, in response to human and health conditions created by the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Over the 85-year history of Simcoe Hall, this non-profit organization has helped tens of thousands of at-risk individuals, living, and working in our community.
Simcoe Hall currently offers the following:
· A ministry-funded After-School program that provides a safe place for almost 50 children and youth ages 7-13 to participate in active play, receive homework support, and allow access to proper nutrition. Daily, each child receives a snack and dinner.
· A Food Bank, one of the largest in Durham Region, addressing the challenge of food security by providing non-perishables and fresh produce to over three thousand individuals a month.
· A Senior Program called the Sassy Seniors Club for adults 55 +. The weekly program offers a variety of activities including bingo, as well as snacks, coffee, and a hot lunch prepared by our cook. The program gives those attend the opportunity to socialize, spend time with their friends and stay connected.
· Seasonal programs such as: New backpacks full of supplies are made available to children, youth, and teens starting school; Provision of food hampers to close to one thousand families and toys to children at Christmas.

To provide wellness opportunities through our foodbank and programs that serve children, individuals and families who experience financial and social challenges. Our vision is to be part of a community that will allow children, individuals, and families to experience and lead healthy, meaningful, and socially responsible lives.
SUMMARY
Simcoe Hall is searching for an enthusiastic, driven individual with financial experience to join our volunteer Board of Directors. The Director will have oversight responsibilities for the maintenance of the agency’s financial records following legislation and GAP. This individual will work directly with the board, Executive Director, bookkeeper, and the agency’s auditor. The range of the agency’s operating budget is $800,000 - $1,000,000.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Ensure that effective financial measures, procedures, and controls are in place that are appropriate for the agency to comply and adhere to all regulatory requirements for non-profit organizations.
· Participate in the development of a draft annual budget and present to the board for approval.
· Present monthly financial statements to the Board for approval.
· Monitor the monthly reporting and projected financial statements and advise board of financial related issues.
· Coordinate with agency’s Auditors regarding preparation of the audited financial statements. Provide oversight to address auditors’ concerns, identify issues and deficiencies.
· Interact with Executive Director and Bookkeeper regarding monthly financial statements, annual budget, and auditors’ reports.
· On-going monitoring of financial Policies and Procedures and review with the Board.
· Serve as a co-signer of cheques with at least one other signing Officer.

General Responsibilities of the Board of Directors
The Board is responsible for the governance and the overall performance of the Corporation. The responsbilities of the Board shall inlcude all things required by the Board pursuant to Non-Profit Corporatons Act, and other applicable laws, including without limitation:
- Strategic Planning
- Financial oversight including appointment of an Auditor
- Governance
- Appoint and supervise the Executive Director
- Montoring of organizational risk and mitigation strategies
- Ensure mechanisms are in place to provide high quality of care to people with intellectual disabilities
The Board of Directors represents the leaders of our agency and serves as a working board that oversees the long term strategic vision and overall health of the organization. Directors approve the organization’s philosophy and continually review the management’s performance while working toward agency goals. The Board of Directors will also annually review and approve plans for funding in view of organizational goals. Board members have a list of responsibilities that they renew every year during the annual election at our Annual General Meeting.
• Assist with establishing, monitoring, coordinating and implementing the organization’s administrative policies for Afiwi Groove School.
• Track and monitor student absences.
• E-mail/telephone correspondence with parents, schools and community organizations and answering basic inquiries (i.e. registrations, performances/bookings)
• Maintain overall contact lists for staff & board member
• Filing & Photocopying
• Issue thank-you letters/ cards to donors, schools and festivals and event planners.
• Manage calendar and schedule meetings (ie. workshops, executive board meetings, department meeting)
• Preparing all required documentation for
• Attend Board and Instructor meetings on an as needed basis
• Mailings
• Scanning and backing up documents
• Other duties as assigned by Management.
• Print attendance sheet for teachers and administer their hours
• Administer dance studio database. Charge accounts of parents who are late with payments
• Update parents and student profiles.
• Generating mailing lists for new student campaigns, mailings, newsletters, event and concert invitations
• Ensure digital and print materials are available for distribution.
• Generate contracts for printing and mailing
• managing correspondences and invoices through Quick Books
• Processing debit/credit card payments at the studio
• Upload receipts and expense into Quick Books or send to the accountant.
We are looking for interested and committed Board Members to work with us to help bring a low-cost, Spay/Neuter Clinic to Durham Region.

FOOTPRINTS 4 Autism is a nonprofit registered charity serving Durham Region. We offer respite and recreational programs for families with children and youth on the autism spectrum. We are currently growing from a Steering Committee to a Governance Board, and looking for new members to join our Board.
We need Board members in the following areas: Marketing, Communications, Fund Development, Finance and Secretary. For a 2-year commitment.
Board meetings are held once-a-month in Whitby. We have a virtual option as well. Members can choose roles in Marketing & Communications, Fund Development, Finance, Human Resources and ad-hoc Project sub-committees.
These roles can be rewarding to anyone from lawyers, insurance agents, marketing and advertising to accountants, fundraisers, administration, and community minded people, to name a few.

Community Living Oshawa/Clarington is an accredited, non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the achievement of personal outcomes for people with developmental disabilities. We are currently accepting applications and nominations for members of the Board of Directors and committees of the Board.
PURPOSE:
To guide the organization, in partnership with the Executive Director and Senior Management Team, through the implementation of the organizational strategic plan.
ROLE/RESPONSIBILITIES:
