About Afiwi Groove School

Afiwi Groove School is a community-based arts and culture organization dedicated to empowering youth through music, arts, and creative expression. Our programs support young people in building confidence, developing creative skills, and connecting with Caribbean and global cultural traditions.

Role

Afiwi Groove School is seeking a passionate and organized Volunteer Communications Lead to help strengthen the organization’s voice and storytelling. This role will focus on developing engaging content that highlights our programs, youth achievements, and community impact through newsletters, articles, and website updates.

The Communications Lead will play an important role in helping Afiwi share its mission, grow its audience, and keep the community informed about programs, events, and opportunities.

Location: Remote / Pickering, Ontario (Hybrid optional)
Position Type: Volunteer

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage Afiwi Groove School’s communications strategy.
  • Create and distribute a monthly or quarterly newsletter to share updates, program highlights, and upcoming events.
  • Write articles and stories that highlight youth achievements, community partnerships, and program impact.
  • Create and update content for the Afiwi Groove School website, including blog posts, program updates, and announcements.
  • Collaborate with program leads to gather stories, photos, and updates from Afiwi activities.
  • Support communications for events, workshops, and performances.
  • Ensure messaging is consistent with Afiwi’s mission, values, and brand.
  • Work with the social media and marketing team to align messaging across platforms.
  • Help build Afiwi’s online presence by sharing compelling stories about the organization’s work.

Qualifications

  • Strong writing and editing skills.
  • Experience creating newsletters, blog posts, or website content.
  • Ability to translate program activities into engaging stories and updates.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Interest in arts, culture, youth development, and community engagement.

Assets

  • Experience with website platforms (e.g., WordPress, Wix, or similar).
  • Experience using newsletter platforms such as Mailchimp or Constant Contact.
  • Background in communications, journalism, marketing, or media.
  • Experience working with nonprofit or community organizations.

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 3–5 hours per week
  • Flexible schedule with occasional support during major events or program launches.

About Afiwi Groove School

Afiwi Groove School is seeking a passionate and detail-oriented Volunteer Grant Writer to support our mission of providing high-quality arts education and cultural programming. The successful candidate will be responsible for researching, writing, and submitting grant proposals to government agencies, foundations, and corporate sponsors, helping to secure funding that sustains and expands our programs.

Position Type: Volunteer (Virtual & In-Person)

Time Commitment: 10–15 hours per week

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research and identify funding opportunities from government, corporate, and private foundation sources
  • Write, edit, and submit compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and reports
  • Maintain a grants calendar to track deadlines, submissions, and reporting requirements
  • Collaborate with leadership to gather program data, budgets, and impact stories
  • Ensure compliance with all grant requirements and guidelines
  • Prepare and submit timely grant reports and funding updates
  • Build and maintain relationships with funders and partners
  • Track and document all grant activity and outcomes

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience writing successful grant proposals, particularly with government and corporate funders
  • Strong research, writing, and editing skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines
  • Familiarity with nonprofit operations and funding structures
  • Ability to translate program goals into compelling narratives
  • Strong organizational and project management skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in arts, education, or community-based organizations
  • Knowledge of Canadian government grant systems (federal, provincial, and municipal)

WRITERS - Do you have a way with words, or just an interest in writing? We have an opportunity for you to write about food- and sustainability-related topics for the blog! It’s written for young people, by young people, to educate and inspire your peers. 

EDITORS - The essence of the blog lies in having high quality content, and that shouldn’t fall solely on the blog writers. Our editors are responsible for reviewing each post and providing suggestions and feedback before the posts get published. 

DESIGNERS & PUBLISHERS - The aesthetic of the blog is important for capturing readers’ attention. This means having a featured image for each and every blog post created; and publishing each post in a way that is user friendly and appealing. If you have a creative eye and want to produce final pieces that are inviting, this role could be the perfect fit for you!  

Time commitment: 6 month minimum, 2+ contributions / month on a self-selected schedule
