Role
Afiwi Groove School is seeking a passionate and organized Volunteer Communications Lead to help strengthen the organization’s voice and storytelling. This role will focus on developing engaging content that highlights our programs, youth achievements, and community impact through newsletters, articles, and website updates.
The Communications Lead will play an important role in helping Afiwi share its mission, grow its audience, and keep the community informed about programs, events, and opportunities.
Location: Remote / Pickering, Ontario (Hybrid optional)

Key Responsibilities
- Develop and manage Afiwi Groove School’s communications strategy.
- Create and distribute a monthly or quarterly newsletter to share updates, program highlights, and upcoming events.
- Write articles and stories that highlight youth achievements, community partnerships, and program impact.
- Create and update content for the Afiwi Groove School website, including blog posts, program updates, and announcements.
- Collaborate with program leads to gather stories, photos, and updates from Afiwi activities.
- Support communications for events, workshops, and performances.
- Ensure messaging is consistent with Afiwi’s mission, values, and brand.
- Work with the social media and marketing team to align messaging across platforms.
- Help build Afiwi’s online presence by sharing compelling stories about the organization’s work.
Qualifications
- Strong writing and editing skills.
- Experience creating newsletters, blog posts, or website content.
- Ability to translate program activities into engaging stories and updates.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Interest in arts, culture, youth development, and community engagement.
Assets
- Experience with website platforms (e.g., WordPress, Wix, or similar).
- Experience using newsletter platforms such as Mailchimp or Constant Contact.
- Background in communications, journalism, marketing, or media.
- Experience working with nonprofit or community organizations.
Time Commitment
- Approximately 3–5 hours per week
- Flexible schedule with occasional support during major events or program launches.

About Afiwi Groove School
Afiwi Groove School is seeking a proactive and media-savvy Public Relations & Media Relations Volunteer to help increase awareness of our programs, events, and community impact through strategic media outreach and storytelling. This role focuses on securing interviews, creating press materials, and building relationships with media and community platforms.
Position Type: Volunteer (Virtual & In-Person)
Time Commitment: 10–15 hours per month
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and distribute press releases for programs, performances, workshops, and community events
- Pitch story ideas and interview opportunities to local media outlets, podcasts, radio stations, blogs, and community platforms
- Coordinate media interviews and speaking opportunities for Afiwi Groove School leadership and youth participants
- Help secure media coverage before and after events
- Create media kits, talking points, and promotional materials
- Build and maintain relationships with journalists, media contacts, influencers, and community organizations
- Support event media coverage by coordinating photos, testimonials, and highlights
- Assist in sharing Afiwi Groove School’s impact stories and community achievements
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have an education or experience in communications, writing, PR, journalism, social media, marketing, or business administration.

The Board of Directors represents the leaders of our agency and serves as a working board that oversees the long term strategic vision and overall health of the organization. Directors approve the organization’s philosophy and continually review the management’s performance while working toward agency goals. The Board of Directors will also annually review and approve plans for funding in view of organizational goals. Board members have a list of responsibilities that they renew every year during the annual election at our Annual General Meeting.

This program allows high schools students to be mentored and get the 40 volunteer community hours required to graduate from High School through skill building activities such as business management, communications, & Marketing, Project Management, and more for ages 13-18 years old. Volunteer throughout active program, distributing food to the general public, and feeding the homeless community members, participate in the execution of project such as Youth Mental Health Chat, Queens Park Mental Health Chat and various activities.

EmpowHER is a dynamic leadership and mentorship program designed to equip young women and LGBTQ2+ individuals (ages 12–30) with the skills, networks, and opportunities to excel in their chosen fields. This hybrid program (both virtual and in-person) provides hands-on experiences with civic action.
EmpowHER is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and protected refugees who are passionate about civic engagement and making a meaningful impact in their communities. Participants will engage in real-world projects, leadership training, and mentorship opportunities that foster growth and empowerment.
